Caricaturist in County Durham– A Local Perspective
I’ve lived in the North East for over 15 years, and during that time I’ve got to know County Durham incredibly well, not just as a place to live, but as a working entertainer.
I’m currently based in Rowlands Gill, right on the border of County Durham, which means I regularly work right across the region.
Some of my earliest experience as a caricaturist came from spending a full summer drawing in Durham City, setting up in the square several days a week and sketching tourists, locals, and anyone passing by. When I was working there as a street artist, I was alongside human statues, street magicians, and even a rather loud Tibetan throat singer. It was fast-paced, unpredictable, and the perfect training ground for the quickfire, engaging style I use today.
County Durham offers an incredible range of venues. From spectacular historic colleges that open their doors for weddings and events, to rustic farms and natural outdoor settings like tipi weddings, right through to grand halls built during the height of the Industrial Revolution, some of the most lavish and impressive venues anywhere in the UK. A rich history shaped by the Prince Bishops who once ruled the county, and the proud mining heritage that nearly everyone in County Durham can trace a connection to, gives the area a real sense of identity that comes through at every event.
That variety is what makes working here so enjoyable, no two events ever feel the same.
I’ve been working full-time as a professional caricaturist for years now, providing live caricature entertainment across County Durham for weddings, corporate events, and private parties.
Because I’ve worked in so many different types of spaces, I understand how to adapt to each one, whether that’s blending into a relaxed outdoor setting, or becoming part of the energy in a packed, high-end venue. It’s about reading the room, engaging with guests, and creating moments people remember long after the event.
Below are some of my favourite types of venues in and around County Durham, and why they work so well for live caricature entertainment, wedding illustration, and interactive guest experiences.
My Favourite Venues in Durham
Every venue works differently and has different strength here’s how I tailor live caricature entertainment to each Durham wedding venue.
Entertainment at
South Causey Inn, Durham

South Causey Inn is easily one of my favourite venues to work at as a caricature artist and Durham entertainer.
It’s just a few minutes from the A1, which makes it really easy for guests to get to, and it has plenty of on-site accommodation, which is always a huge bonus for weddings and larger events.
It’s also one of the most popular wedding venues in the North East, and for good reason. There are multiple spaces to get married, including beautiful rustic barns, elegant indoor suites, and separate areas that give each wedding its own feel. Even when the venue is busy, it never feels crowded, each event still feels private and personal.
One of the things that really stands out about South Causey Inn is how well organised everything is. The staff are experienced, friendly, and used to running smooth, high-quality events. They’ve got everything on site, from stylists and makeup artists to a spa, their own brewery, and even a small farm, which adds a bit of character and charm you don’t find everywhere.
I work here regularly as a caricature artist providing wedding entertainment in Durham, and it’s actually only about 10 minutes from where I live, so it’s a venue I know really well. I’m often booked to provide caricature entertainment during drinks receptions, the after-meal lull, or during room turnaround, when guests are ready for something interactive. That’s where live caricature drawing works perfectly, creating quick, funny portraits, getting people laughing, and keeping the energy flowing.
And one thing I always tell people, the food is incredible. They really don’t hold back, especially with the buffets, so if food is high on your priority list, this is a big plus. You definitely won’t be going hungry.
The only thing worth mentioning is that because it’s such a popular venue, a lot of people have been to weddings here before. For some couples that can be a drawback. That said, with multiple different spaces to choose from, you can still create something that feels completely unique while benefiting from the quality and experience that South Causey Inn is known for.
Vibe: rustic, cosy, countryside, relaxed, romantic, lively, welcoming, social, characterful, interactive
Best for: drinks reception entertainment, after-meal lull, room turnaround, evening entertainment, live caricature drawing, hiring a caricature artist, wedding entertainment Durham
South Causey Inn uses its outdoor space really well. Even though some areas are quite compact, it never feels like you’re short on space. The Old Barn has a lovely courtyard that works perfectly for drinks receptions, the Durham Suite has a beautiful garden, and the Farmhouse offers more open outdoor space.
These areas are often great sun traps, which makes them ideal for relaxed drinks receptions and live caricature entertainment, where I can move between groups, draw caricatures, and keep guests engaged throughout the event.
And one of the big bonuses here is the setting, you’ve got fantastic views across County Durham, which look great at any time of year and add to the whole experience.
Entertainment at
Whitworth Hall, Durham

Whitworth Hall Hotel has changed massively over the years, and in the best possible way.
I first worked here around 10 years ago as a caricature artist, and since being taken over by the Apartment Group, it’s been completely transformed into one of the most beautiful wedding venues in the North East. The attention to detail now is on another level, and the ceremony room in particular is absolutely stunning.
As a Durham entertainer providing wedding entertainment in Durham, this is a venue that really works well for live caricature entertainment. Drinks receptions usually take place in the bar or out on the patio, which gives me the perfect opportunity to move around guests, drawing caricatures, creating quick portraits, and getting people laughing early on in the day.
After the meal is another great moment. That natural lull is ideal for bringing the energy back up, and that’s where hiring a caricature artist really adds something, keeping guests entertained while things transition into the evening.
One of the standout features here is the outdoor space. The patio area is a brilliant setting, especially in good weather, and works really well for evening entertainment. Drawing caricatures outside, with guests relaxed and enjoying themselves, always creates a great atmosphere.
As you’d expect with the Apartment Group, everything is very well organised. The staff know exactly what they’re doing, and events run smoothly, which makes a big difference when you’re planning a wedding.
They’ve also got their own Deer on site, which is a nice touch and adds to the overall experience.
Vibe: elegant, grand, stylish, romantic, relaxed, high-end, scenic, sociable, modern luxury
Best for: drinks reception entertainment, after-meal lull, patio entertainment, evening entertainment, live caricature drawing, hiring a caricature artist, wedding entertainment Durham
Whitworth Hall offers a really strong mix of indoor and outdoor space, which works perfectly for live entertainment. The patio is ideal for drinks receptions and evening gatherings, giving guests space to relax while I move between groups drawing caricatures and keeping everyone engaged.
With its recent transformation, stunning ceremony space, and well-run events, it’s become one of the standout venues in County Durham for couples looking for something a bit more refined.
And if you’re looking to add something memorable to your day, having a caricature artist drawing quickfire portraits for your guests is a brilliant way to make the whole experience even more special.
Entertainment at
Runa Farm, Barnard Castle

Runa Farm is another standout venue from the Apartment Group, and it’s quickly become one of the most popular wedding venues in the North East.
I’ve worked here countless times as a caricature artist and Durham entertainer, and it’s a fantastic place to provide wedding entertainment in Durham. The venue itself is stunning, you’re guaranteed beautiful photographs here, with a real sense of style and attention to detail throughout.
As you’d expect from the Apartment Group, everything is very well organised. The team are experienced, professional, and know how to run a smooth event, which makes a huge difference on the day.
One of the biggest strengths of Runa Farm is the outdoor space. The back garden in particular gets plenty of sun and offers lots of great spots for photos, which makes it perfect for drinks receptions and relaxed guest interaction.
That’s often where I’ll be working as a caricature artist, especially during the afternoon drinks reception while you’re off having your photographs taken. It’s a great time for live caricature entertainment, moving between groups, drawing quick portraits, and keeping guests entertained while the day flows naturally.
I also regularly work towards the end of the meal and into the evening, when guests are ready for something interactive. That transition period is ideal for caricature entertainment, helping keep the energy up and giving people something memorable to take away.
One thing worth thinking about with Runa Farm is the location. Barnard Castle is a bit more rural, so it’s important to consider how your guests will travel. There is accommodation on site, and more available nearby, but a lot of couples arrange transport, especially if guests are heading back towards places like Darlington.
Vibe: stylish, countryside, relaxed, romantic, modern rustic, scenic, elegant, social, high-end
Best for: drinks reception entertainment, garden entertainment, after-meal lull, evening entertainment, live caricature drawing, hiring a caricature artist, wedding entertainment Durham
Runa Farm’s layout and outdoor spaces make it ideal for live entertainment. The garden areas are perfect for relaxed drinks receptions, giving me the space to move between guests, draw caricatures, and create a fun, interactive atmosphere.
With its combination of stunning surroundings, strong organisation, and beautifully designed spaces, it’s easy to see why it’s become one of the most in-demand venues in County Durham.
And if you’re looking to add something personal and memorable, having a caricature artist drawing quickfire portraits throughout the day is a great way to keep guests entertained and give them something to take home.
Entertainment at
Lartington Hall, Barnard Castle

Lartington Hall is probably the most luxurious of the Apartment Group’s venues in the Barnard Castle area, and it’s absolutely stunning.
Set within acres of countryside, the hall itself dates back to the 18th century and was originally built as a private country residence. It still carries that grand, historic feel today, with sweeping architecture, elegant interiors, and a real sense of occasion from the moment you arrive.
The Apartment Group have done a fantastic job here, but interestingly, they haven’t had to change much. The building already had so much character and presence, it really speaks for itself.
I’ve worked here in all seasons as a caricature artist and Durham entertainer, and it never disappoints. In the summer, the gardens are incredible, real sun traps, perfect for drinks receptions and outdoor wedding entertainment. In the winter, when the snow comes down, the views across the rolling fields are something else entirely, just miles of white countryside. It’s one of those venues that genuinely feels memorable, whatever time of year you visit.
As a venue for wedding entertainment in Durham, it’s a really interesting space. I often work during drinks receptions, especially out in the gardens, moving between guests and providing live caricature entertainment while you’re off having your photographs taken.
I’ll also work during the meal, as this is often a sit-down service, and then into the evening as the energy shifts.
One thing that’s quite unique about Lartington Hall is the layout. There are multiple rooms, and guests tend to spread out more than they would at other venues. That can be a challenge for some types of entertainment, but it actually works really well for a roaming caricature artist or magician.
Being able to move between spaces, draw caricatures, engage different groups, and keep the atmosphere going across the whole venue is where this kind of entertainment really shines. It helps keep everyone involved and brings the energy back together as the evening develops.
Vibe: grand, luxurious, historic, elegant, romantic, scenic, atmospheric, exclusive, high-end
Best for: drinks reception entertainment, garden entertainment, during the meal, evening entertainment, roaming caricature artist, live caricature drawing, wedding entertainment Durham
Lartington Hall’s mix of indoor and outdoor space makes it ideal for live caricature entertainment. The gardens are perfect for relaxed drinks receptions, while the multiple rooms inside give great opportunities to move between guests and keep everyone engaged.
It’s a venue that stands out, not just for how it looks, but for how it feels on the day.
And if you’re looking to add something interactive and memorable, having a caricature artist drawing quickfire portraits throughout the day is a great way to bring all those different spaces and moments together
Entertainment at
61 Durham

61 Durham is located just 15 minutes from Durham City and was formerly known as Hallgarth Manor, a name many people in the area will still recognise.
Now under new ownership from the team behind The Crab & Lobster in Thirsk, the venue has seen some really positive changes. From my experience working here as a caricature artist and Durham entertainer, it’s quickly becoming a strong option for wedding entertainment in Durham.
I’ve worked here a few times since the takeover, and one of the standout features is the garden. It’s a really beautiful space and a proper sun trap, making it ideal for drinks receptions and outdoor wedding entertainment.
In fact, my last event here before everything shut down in 2020 was creating a full guest caricature piece, drawing a large group portrait for nearly everyone attending (about860 people probably the last big i attended that year) . It was a brilliant night, and the kind of atmosphere this venue creates really sticks with you.
In terms of wedding entertainment, drinks receptions usually take place in the bar area, and if the weather’s good, things spill out into the garden. That’s where live caricature drawing works best, moving between guests, drawing quick portraits, and keeping people entertained while the day flows naturally.
After the meal is another great opportunity, especially in the evening when guests are relaxed and ready for something interactive. That’s where hiring a caricature artist really adds something, keeping the energy up and giving guests something memorable to take away.
One thing to be aware of is that if the weather turns and everything moves indoors, the bar area can feel a bit more compact. It’s not a problem, but it’s worth bearing in mind when planning your entertainment.
Vibe: intimate, relaxed, garden-focused, social, cosy, stylish, informal, charming
Best for: drinks reception entertainment, garden entertainment, after-meal lull, evening entertainment, live caricature drawing, hiring a caricature artist, wedding entertainment Durham
61 Durham works particularly well when the weather’s on your side. The garden gives you a fantastic space for drinks receptions, allowing guests to spread out while I move between groups drawing caricatures and keeping everyone engaged.
Even indoors, the more intimate layout can create a great atmosphere for interactive entertainment, especially later in the evening.
It’s a venue that feels personal, relaxed, and full of character, and with the recent changes, it’s definitely one to watch for weddings and events in County Durham.
Entertainment at
Blackwell Grange, Darlington

Blackwell Grange Hotel is a really beautiful venue with a strong sense of history, set within some genuinely stunning grounds.
As you arrive, it’s one of those places that makes you wonder why this part of County Durham isn’t talked about more. The setting, the approach, and the grounds all give it a real sense of space and character.
Inside, one of the standout features is the staircase, which creates a great focal point and adds to the overall feel of the venue. It’s a place that works really well visually, both for guests and for photography.
From my experience working here as a caricature artist and Durham entertainer, it’s a venue that benefits from interactive, mobile entertainment. Drinks receptions tend to move between spaces, from the bar to the corridors and out into the garden when the weather allows, so having a caricature artist moving between guests, drawing quick portraits, and keeping people engaged works perfectly.
I’ll often be providing wedding entertainment in Durham during the drinks reception, as well as later in the day. The evening can work really well too, although if you’re in the main ballroom, it can get a little darker, so good lighting is something I always plan for when drawing caricatures.
That kind of flexibility is where live caricature entertainment really comes into its own, adapting to the space, moving with the guests, and keeping the atmosphere going throughout the day.
Vibe: classic, historic, elegant, relaxed, spacious, scenic, traditional, understated, charming
Best for: drinks reception entertainment, roaming caricature artist, garden entertainment, after-meal lull, evening entertainment, live caricature drawing, wedding entertainment Durham
Blackwell Grange works particularly well for entertainment that can move with the flow of the day. With guests often spreading across different areas during drinks receptions, having a caricature artist engaging people across the space helps keep the energy consistent.
It’s also a venue that feels slightly under the radar compared to others in the region, but that’s part of its appeal. It offers beautiful surroundings, a relaxed atmosphere, and plenty of opportunity to create a really memorable experience for your guests.
And if you’re looking to add something interactive and personal, having a caricature artist drawing quickfire portraits throughout the day is a great way to bring everything together.
Entertainment at
Beamish Hall, Durham

Beamish Hall is a fantastic venue and easily one of the top wedding venues in the North East.
I’ve worked here regularly as a caricature artist and Durham entertainer, across weddings, corporate events, and even family fun days, and it’s always a brilliant place to provide entertainment.
The grounds are absolutely beautiful. You’d be hard pushed to get a bad photograph here, with expansive gardens and plenty of scenic spots for couples and guests alike. It’s a great setting for drinks receptions, especially in the warmer months, where I can move between groups, drawing caricatures and keeping guests entertained outdoors.
Inside, the hall itself is full of character. It’s a historic building with lots of different spaces, all of which work really well for both photography and live entertainment. From my perspective as a caricature artist, it’s close to ideal, there’s plenty of light, lots of room to move around, and a natural flow to the space that makes interactive entertainment really effective.
It’s also an ideal venue for a large wedding. There’s enough space for guests to spread out comfortably, while still keeping a strong atmosphere throughout the day and into the evening.
One thing I’ve noticed is that some entertainment, like photo booths, is often set up in separate areas or hallways. While that works well in its own way, it can feel a little detached from the main event. That’s where having a roaming caricature artist or magician makes a real difference, keeping the entertainment in the heart of the room, engaging guests, and adding to the overall atmosphere.
As a venue for wedding entertainment in Durham, it offers a lot of flexibility. I’ll often be booked for drinks reception entertainment, the after-meal lull, and into the evening, adapting to the flow of the day and making sure guests are entertained throughout.
Vibe: grand, historic, elegant, lively, spacious, scenic, social, classic, high-end
Best for: drinks reception entertainment, garden entertainment, large weddings, after-meal lull, evening entertainment, live caricature drawing, roaming caricature artist, wedding entertainment Durham
Beamish Hall is one of those venues that just works. The combination of space, light, and layout makes it ideal for live caricature entertainment, whether that’s outside in the gardens or inside moving between guests.
For larger weddings in particular, having a caricature artist drawing quickfire portraits and interacting with guests throughout the day helps keep the energy up and makes sure everyone feels part of the experience.
It’s a venue that delivers every time, and one that’s always a pleasure to work at.
Entertainment at
The Croft, Darlington

The Croft Hotel is a really special venue, and another great example of what the Apartment Group do so well.
They’ve completely transformed the space, and it now features one of the best ceremony rooms in the North East, something they seem to consistently deliver across their venues.
From my experience working here as a caricature artist and Durham entertainer, it’s a venue that works particularly well for smaller weddings. It has a more intimate feel, which really suits interactive entertainment and allows guests to feel more connected throughout the day.
I’m often booked here for drinks reception entertainment and into the evening, providing live caricature drawing and moving between guests to keep everyone engaged. The layout lends itself really well to that kind of personal, up-close entertainment
.
While the venue itself has more limited outdoor space than some others, it makes excellent use of what it has. The patio area is well designed and often acts as a bit of a sun trap, especially in the early afternoon, making it ideal for relaxed drinks receptions and outdoor caricature entertainment.
And although you might initially think photo opportunities are limited, that’s not really the case. Nearby, you’ve got a beautiful old Gothic church, the river, and some lovely historic bridges, all of which create fantastic backdrops for wedding photography.
As with other Apartment Group venues, everything is very well organised. The team are experienced and professional, and the day tends to run smoothly, which makes a big difference when planning your wedding.
Vibe: intimate, stylish, romantic, relaxed, elegant, cosy, social, modern classic
Best for: drinks reception entertainment, smaller weddings, patio entertainment, after-meal lull, evening entertainment, live caricature drawing, hiring a caricature artist, wedding entertainment Durham

And for smaller weddings in particular, having a caricature artist drawing quickfire portraits and interacting with guests throughout the day adds a personal touch that really stands out.
Entertainment at
Black Horse Beamish - Red Row Estate

The Black Horse Beamish is a charming countryside venue near Stanley, offering a relaxed and informal setting for weddings and events.
I actually worked at one of the very first weddings here around 10 years ago as a caricature artist, and it’s a venue I’ve returned to many times since. I still remember one wedding featuring a surprise flyover and a stunt plane dive-bombing the guests, which definitely added a bit of excitement to the day, even if it did interrupt my set slightly.
The venue itself is centred around a traditional country pub with a large marquee space, which is where most weddings take place. It gives you the best of both worlds, a cosy indoor feel with the pub, and a much larger, flexible space for your main celebration.
From my experience as a Durham entertainer providing wedding entertainment in Durham, this layout works really well for live caricature entertainment. I’ll often be drawing caricatures during the meal or towards the end of it, especially around room turnaround, moving from table to table, creating quick portraits, and keeping guests engaged.
There’s also some lovely outdoor space, and the views across the valley are a real highlight. On a clear day, you can even see across towards South Causey Inn, which adds to the atmosphere and sense of place.
Because of the marquee setup, it’s a venue that naturally suits more relaxed weddings, where guests are happy to move around, chat, and enjoy the day at their own pace. That’s exactly where a roaming caricature artist works best, bringing entertainment directly to guests rather than having them queue or leave the main space.
Vibe: relaxed, rustic, countryside, informal, social, scenic, laid-back, lively
Best for: marquee weddings, table-to-table entertainment, after-meal lull, evening entertainment, live caricature drawing, roaming caricature artist, wedding entertainment Durham
The Black Horse Beamish is ideal if you’re looking for a more laid-back wedding with a strong social atmosphere. The combination of the pub, marquee, and surrounding countryside creates a really enjoyable environment for guests.
For this kind of setting, having a caricature artist moving between tables, drawing quickfire portraits, and interacting with guests is a perfect fit, keeping everyone entertained and adding something memorable to the day.

Dalton Old Pump House is an absolutely stunning venue and one that has quickly taken the North East, and County Durham in particular, by storm.
Set within a restored Victorian pump house, it has a real industrial charm that feels perfectly suited to the North East. It’s one of those venues where it’s genuinely hard to go wrong, everything about it just works.
From my experience working here as a caricature artist and Durham entertainer, it’s a venue that’s very well organised and runs smoothly throughout the day. The main hall is a fantastic space to work in, with plenty of room for guests and a great atmosphere for wedding entertainment in Durham.
While there isn’t a huge amount of outdoor space, the building itself more than makes up for it. The exterior provides a brilliant backdrop for photographs, and it’s often all you need to create something really memorable.
Inside, the layout is interesting. There’s a smaller bar area upstairs, which means guests naturally move between spaces throughout the day and into the evening. That’s where a roaming caricature artist really comes into their own, moving between rooms, drawing caricatures, and keeping guests engaged wherever they are.
I’ll often be working across both areas, providing live caricature entertainment during drinks receptions, the after-meal lull, and into the evening, adapting to the flow of the venue and making sure the energy stays consistent.

Bowburn Hall Hotel is a really beautiful wedding venue in County Durham, recently renovated and full of charm.
One of the standout features here is the outdoor space. The gardens are a real sun trap and provide the perfect setting for drinks receptions, making them ideal for live caricature entertainment. I often work here as a caricature artist and Durham entertainer throughout the day, from drinks receptions to the post-meal lull, and quite regularly into the evening celebrations as well. It’s a venue that flows really well, and there’s always a great atmosphere.
One thing I’ve noticed is that photo booths are often set up outside in the evening, which can leave the main room feeling a little quieter. That’s where a mix-and-mingle caricature artist really adds value, keeping guests entertained indoors, interacting with different groups, and making sure the energy stays high.
The staff here are always fantastic, and the organisation is spot on, which makes a big difference when you’re planning wedding entertainment in Durham.

One of the defining features here is the variety. There are multiple rooms to choose from, as well as outdoor areas, which gives couples a lot of flexibility when planning their wedding. The setting itself is beautiful, with views across Hardwick Park and plenty of space for guests to enjoy.
From my experience working here as a caricature artist and Durham entertainer, it’s a venue that can feel quite busy, especially during peak moments of the day. Guests often move between different areas, from the gardens to indoor spaces and sometimes into separate rooms or lobbies.
That’s where a roaming caricature artist really comes into their own. Being able to move between spaces, draw caricatures, and interact with guests wherever they are makes a big difference. Rather than guests needing to come to one spot, the entertainment comes to them, keeping the atmosphere consistent across the whole venue.
I’ll often be providing wedding entertainment in Durham here during drinks receptions, the after-meal lull, and into the evening, adapting to the flow of the day and making sure guests stay engaged throughout.

Because it’s a tipi venue, the atmosphere is a bit different to a traditional wedding. It’s more laid-back, more social, and perfect for interactive entertainment where guests can relax, chat, and enjoy the experience.

There’s a lot to like here. The newer tipi setup looks fantastic and gives you that relaxed, outdoor feel, with easy access to the gardens. Some of the other rooms can feel a little busier, but they’re still very functional and well set up for weddings and events.

Entertainment at
St Chads

St Chad’s College is a relatively new wedding venue in Durham, but it’s definitely growing in popularity.
It’s tucked away and can be a little tricky to find at first, but once you arrive, it’s a really beautiful and distinctive setting. Part of Durham University, it has that classic collegiate feel, full of character, history, and a slightly more refined, traditional atmosphere.
From my experience working here as a caricature artist and Durham entertainer, it’s a venue that offers something a bit different. The spaces feel intimate but elegant, and it’s particularly appealing if you’ve got a connection to Durham University, it adds a personal touch that makes the day feel even more special.
The ballroom is one of the standout features. It’s a striking space with a glass ceiling, which gives it a bright, open feel. One thing to be aware of though is that it can get quite loud, especially once music and guests are in full swing, so it’s worth thinking carefully about how sound is managed during the evening.
In terms of wedding entertainment in Durham, I’ve found this is a venue where a roaming caricature artist works best. Being able to move between guests, draw caricatures, and interact in smaller groups helps keep the experience personal and engaging, especially in a setting like this.
I’ve been invited to work here a few times now, and it’s clearly a venue that’s on the rise.
Vibe: elegant, historic, academic, intimate, refined, unique, characterful, traditional
Best for: drinks reception entertainment, smaller weddings, after-meal lull, evening entertainment, live caricature drawing, roaming caricature artist, wedding entertainment Durham
